To achieve and maintain healthy teeth and gums, a patient must develop a good dental routine that includes at-home care and regular dental visits. Professional teeth cleanings, exams, dental X-Rays, and thorough education on how to take care of your smile are the cornerstones of dental health.
This is where the experts at Oak Lawn Smiles come in. Our team is always here to make sure our patients receive top quality care at our dental office, and that includes preventative measures which we not only provide, but teach to our patients so they can maintain optimal oral health.
What We Teach
Beyond recommending patients visit our practice for dental checkups and teeth cleanings twice a year (or every 6 months), we also advise patients on how to care for their teeth based on their specific dental needs. This can include anything from toothpaste and mouthwash recommendations, to food education.
Diet and oral health are directly related, so the food you eat has an impact on your teeth and gums. At Oak Lawn Smiles, we advise patients on what foods are good for strengthening their teeth, which ones to avoid or reduce consumption of (i.e. soft drinks, excess carbs, sugary and acidic foods), and how to maintain a balanced, tooth-friendly diet.
Patient Responsibility
Each person’s dental health and daily life is different, so our team does all we can to help design dental care routines for patients that are optimized to their lifestyle, age, and needs. We also teach patients what proper, at-home care actually means- such as brushing their teeth twice a day, and flossing at least once a day with the right tools. We may recommend toothbrushes and other dental devices based on current concerns or issues, such as tooth sensitivity or the presence of early stage gum disease.
Patients who have undergone restorative treatments, are currently wearing orthodontic devices, have dentures, etc., will receive special care instructions to help protect their teeth and gums.
